W.O.W. Words

In second grade we do "Word of the Week" (WOW) on Wednesdays.  After every 9 words the students will have a test over the words and their definitions. They make a booklet with all the new words and display them for Exhibit Night.

1. biceps-the muscles on the top of the upper arm
2. foliage-plant leaves
3. percolator-a kind of coffee pot
4. kelp-seaweed
5. geyser-a hot spring that shoots water out of the ground
6. amphibian-an animal living on both land and in water
7. denture-a set of false teeth
8. astronomer-a person who studies outer space
9. belfry-a bell tower  

10. ewe-a female sheep
11. alto-a female singer with a low voice
12. heifer-a young female cow
13. vertebrate- an animal with a backbone
14. gander-a male goose
15. chisel-a tool used for cutting and shaping
16. hexagon-a six-sided figure
17. almanac-a book containing helpful facts
18. derrick-a large crane used to lift heavy objects

19. isthmus-a narrow strip of land connecting other lands
20. exhale-to breathe out
21. lather-the foam formed by using soap and water
22. pedestrian-a person walking
23. thesaurus-a book of synonyms and antonyms
24. marsupial-an animal with a pouch for carrying babies
25. hearth-the raised floor in front of a fireplace
26. nozzle-an adjustable spout on the end of a hose
27. wharf-a place where ocean ships dock

28. arid-dry; without water
29. shears-a pair of large scissors
30. mural-a huge painting, usually on a wall
31. foe-an enemy
32. talon-a bird's long claw
33. kindling-material used to start a fire
34. ottoman- a foot stool
35. urchin-a small, mischievous child
36. curator-a person in charge of a museum
